Background:

I am the first year graduate student from Columbia University, major in Management Science and Engineering. The program is in conjunction with Columbia Engineering School and Columbia Business School. My past professional experiences include corporate banking summer analyst at Citigroup, investment banking internship and consulting experience. I also spent a summer working for a non-profit organization in India and a winter trip to Panama helping set up community cooperative.

Why did you decide to pursue an internship at a Scandinavian corporation?

I am longing to visit Scandinavian countries for years. Scandinavian Corporations are famous for its flat structure, friendly atmosphere and down-to-earth spirit. I had have experience in Asia and US, so this is a great opportunity to get exposed to European market, enjoy Scandinavian culture and visit my favorite countries.

What were the biggest challenges doing an internship in Sweden?

With the help of Gatewayscandinavia, everything was very smoothly. Language is not an issue, since most Swedes speak very frequent English. I had some problem with personal number, an identification number in Sweden. Therefore, I can’t use online banking.

What were the biggest challenges with doing an internship at SEB/H&M?

I worked on e-FX algorithm trading team at SEB this summer. Since I didn’t have any previous experience in trading, it took me some time to get used to forex lingos and thinking. Market information overwhelming was another challenge during the summer internship.

What did you learn from your summer internship?

By attending the morning meeting, I learned how to interpret market information and fundamental analysis. Moreover, sitting on the trading floor provides me with direct exposure to global capital market. Through my summer projects, I learned common technical analysis and knowledge of forex trading. Most importantly, I found my career passion and would love to pursue it upon graduation.

What will you remember the most?

There are too many good memories this summer. The ice breaking trip to Polackstrop at the beginning of the internship (please see video for more information), Malmo trip and accidently meeting with Demark royal family (please see video for more information), a corporate internal interview, and of course, a TV show street interview.

I cherish the friendships with other interns and my coworkers. But most importantly, I will remember a great summer 2012!

What advice would you give to other people who are interested in an internship with H&M/SEB?

Working on the trading floor is exciting and challenging, so make sure to get familiar with Forex and capital market. Do ask questions. Everyone is very friendly and willing to teach you and share their experiences. Most importantly, be open minded and embrace culture exchange.
